Over the weekend of 28 and 29 August, Ariane Janata-Burns, Aline Schloemann and Jessica and Kirsten Fitschen competed in the largest ever Western Cape Climbing Provincial Championships.

 

Jessica was crowned U11 Female Lead Climbing Champion by winning gold on Saturday at CityRock in Paarden Island and then followed that up by being crowned U11 Female Boulder Champion with another gold medal on Sunday at Bloc11 in Diepriver. Ariane dominated her competition and was crowned U15 Female Boulder Champion by winning gold. Aline and Kirsten both finished a respectable 5th and 4th respectively – in their U11 and U9 categories.

 

Climbing is a growing sport, recently making its debut at the Tokyo Olympics. Let’s hope our young athletes go on to represent South Africa at the Olympics.
